Job Summary: Teach assigned classes/ sections and perform activities related to classroom instruction.
Rock Valley seeks a dynamic and passionate full-time temporary Instructor of English Composition to join our Communications and Humanities Divisions for the spring 2025 semester. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching courses in English composition, fostering a positive learning environment, and engaging students in the development of their writing skills. This position is ideal for individuals dedicated to promoting academic excellence and student success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Additional related duties may be assigned.
Education: Master’s degree in English, Composition, Rhetoric, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
Skills: Strong knowledge of English composition theories and practices. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to engage and inspire a diverse student population. Proficiency in using educational technology and learning management systems.
Personal Attributes: Demonstrate commitment to student success and academic excellence. Ability to work independently and collaboratively. Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two years’ experience with curriculum development and assessment.
Two years’ familiarity with online teaching platforms and digital resources for composition instruction.

- Teach English Composition Courses: Instruct students in English Composition I and II, adhering to the college’s curriculum guidelines and standards.
- Course Preparation and Delivery: Prepare and deliver lectures, assignments, and assessments that align with course objectives and learning outcomes.
- Student Engagement: Foster an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that encourages active participation and engagement.
- Assessment and Feedback: Evaluate student performance through essays, assignments, and other assessment methods. Provide constructive feedback to support student improvement.
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute to the department’s initiatives and activities.
- Compliance: Adhere to college policies, procedures, and academic standards.
- Maintain office hours
- Attend required meetings (faculty, division, in-service training, etc.)
- Maintaining the confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Plan course content and assign appropriate course work. (ENG 101 and/or ENG103)
- Meet classes at assigned times.
- Instruct students in the proper use of lab equipment where appropriate.
- Participate in assessment of student learning.
- Maintain student records, evaluate student progress and assign grades.
- Maintain office hours convenient for students.
- Prepare course/class reports as required.
- Attend required meetings (faculty, division, in-service training, etc.)
- Assist in short-term and long-term planning.
- Participate in division, college, advisory committees, and community activities.
- Keep informed on the latest research and journal articles.
- Recruit students when appropriate.
- Assist in placement of graduates when appropriate.
